About us
A new beginning
Over the years, the Mesón has remained faithful to its family roots. Toni and Nieves, the parents of the current generation, continued the legacy with the same dedication and love. Toni, known for his charisma and hospitality, and Nieves, with her skill in the kitchen, made the mesón a beloved place for everyone. Toni and Nieves' love story also began at the mesón, when Nieves, who had come from Madrid, decided to stay in Alicante to start a family.
In 1991, an unfortunate collapse of the original building forced the Mesón to move to its current location. Despite the challenges, the family kept the essence of the Mesón alive, and the tradition continued with the same passion and commitment. Today, Raquel, Pepe and María's granddaughter, runs the Mesón with the same family spirit and mission to offer a unique dining experience. Raquel has taken over from her parents, bringing her personal touch but always maintaining the essence and quality that have characterised Mesón de Labradores for decades.
At Mesón de Labradores, we pride ourselves on serving homemade dishes such as our famous rice dishes, Andalusian-style squid, salted salads, and our legendary "Chupi Chupi" montaditos. In addition, our philosophy focuses on familiarity and hospitality, making sure that every customer feels at home. With a dedicated team and the hope that the next generation will carry on the legacy, we continue to work with humility and passion to offer the best of traditional Alicante cuisine.
A bit of nostalgia
Our History
Since its foundation in 1960, Mesón de Labradores has been a pillar of Alicante's gastronomy, offering a cosy corner to enjoy the most authentic home cooking. This culinary tradition began with Pepe, affectionately known as "Pepe Pagabien" or "Pepe el Guapo", and his wife María. Entrepreneurs and passionate about good food, Pepe and María brought their experience and love for Murcian cuisine to Alicante, where they established a bar that quickly became a meeting point for the community.
Pepe and María arrived from Murcia with their five children, and although Pepe had worked in a pastry shop, he decided to go into business for himself. With his entrepreneurial spirit, Pepe convinced María to open a Murcian bar, taking advantage of her cooking skills and her knowledge of antiques. Mesón de Labradores began to take shape, becoming a place where friends and families could gather to enjoy authentic, home-cooked meals.
3rd and 4th generation
Today, Mesón de Labradores continues to thrive under the management of Raquel, the granddaughter of founders Pepe and María. With her commitment and passion for cooking, Raquel has kept the essence of the mesón alive, adding her personal touch without losing the roots that have made this place a favourite in Alicante. Alongside her, her son Mariano represents the fourth generation at the helm of the business. Mariano, with a fresh and modern vision, works side by side with Raquel, ensuring that the family traditions continue while incorporating new ideas to appeal to future generations. Together, Raquel and Mariano combine experience and modernity, ensuring that Mesón de Labradores remains synonymous with quality and authenticity.
